Gawurra‘s song ‘Ratja Yaliyali’ was announced the winner of the pop category at the NT Song of the Year Awards held in Darwin on 27 June 2015 by MusicNT.

From the small island of Milingimbi, off the coast or Arnhem Land, Gawurra has just recorded his debut album with CAAMA Music, a collection of song inspired by traditional songlines sung in Gupapuyngu language, which will be released in the next few months.

Gawurra says “This is for my friends & for my families. They love my songs and they support me all the way. Thanks to everyone in Milingimbi Ramingining Galiwinku Yirrkala Gapuwiyak Maningrida Tiwi Island. And also for my wife and the kids my brothers and sisters”.

On the night of the awards in Darwin Gawurra was at home in Milingimbi, a small island off the coast of Arnhem Land,  so Micheal ‘Miko’ Smith, Manager of CAAMA Music, accepted the award on his behalf.
