In March eight Aboriginal female singer-songwriters from around Australia flew to Alice Springs to be mentored by the Stiff Gins and record a single in the CAAMA Music studios. They were the winners of the national Alukura songwriting competition, organised by CAAMA Music to uncover a new crop of female talent. A crowdfunding campaign followed, which raised $10,000 towards the creation and promotion of the album. Now the first two singles are due for release, with the album to follow in early 2016.
Kristal West was a finalist on ‘The Voice’ in 2014, as part of the duo ‘Z-K’, mentored by Will.i.am. She is now working as a solo artist and has recently recorded an EP at CAAMA Music, produced by Dave Crowe and due for release in 2016. Her single ‘And That’s Why’ is an original composition and showcases the extraordinary vocal talents that earned her a spot in the finals of The Voice.
Before entering CAAMA Music’s Alukura competition Alice Skye‘s family and friends had never heard her perform or even knew that she composed her own songs. Since then her profile on Triple J Unearthed has attracted reviews such as this from long-time radio presenter Richard Kingsmill “Love the way you’re working that voice. Keep writing/singing please….”
