This year marks the 35th anniversary of the Central Australian Aboriginal Media Association – and to celebrate CAAMA is hosting a very special Christmas celebration on 27 November. The ‘CAAMA Christmas Showcase’ will feature many of the artists recorded at the Alice Springs studios this year, and will provide a taster of the new music due for release in 2016.
As Australia’s oldest Aboriginal record label, CAAMA Music has launched the musical careers of artists such as Frank Yamma, Warumpi Band and Warren H Williams.
“We’re thrilled to showcase all the rising stars to come from the CAAMA Music label next year” says Michael Robertson, CEO of CAAMA.
The night will include performances by local songstress Catherine Satour and her father Bunna Lawrie of Coloured Stone, Jacinta Price ahead of her performance at Woodford Folk Festival, the dynamic guitar duo Apakatjah who will be performing in February at Nannup Music Festival in WA, finalist from TV’s ‘The Voice’ Kristal West and hip-hop duo Karnage n Darknis.
“I’m excited to be releasing my EP next year through CAAMA Music, and am really looking forward to sharing a few of those new songs with everyone at the Christmas Showcase”, says Catherine Satour.
Kristal West’s debut solo single, ‘And That’s Why’, was released on 30 October ahead of the Alukura compilation album following in February 2016, the result of the nationwide song-writing competition and crowdfunding campaign coordinated by CAAMA Music earlier this year. A Brisbane resident, Kristal first visited Alice Springs this year in April as one of the competition winners and has since been back to record her first EP, and then again this month to conduct singing workshops for school children in the remote community of Ampilatwaja.
“I really love coming to Alice Springs – it’s starting to feel like my second home! I’m so glad I’m going to be here for the Christmas Showcase”, says Kristal West.
Upcoming releases next year from CAAMA Music also include Apakatjah’s debut album and the eagerly-awaited second album from local hip-hop duo Karnage n Darknis.
The CAAMA Christmas Showcase will be held at Epilogue rooftop in Alice Springs on 27 November. Doors open 8:30pm.
